Getting larger files over n/w

I've a little but some enough confusing question, I wanna copy a file from my friend's home who is almost 10.56 miles (~ 17 km ) far from my house. Now is that any way that i can copy that file via my internet ?

I.E. by setting up a mirror ?

The file should be uploaded in a password protected ftp site (a ftp server needs to be set up) ... or use a filesharing or p2p network...

Or use scp

Assuming the file is publicly and widely available, there's no advantage in setting up the mirror unless you are on the same LAN -- unless you want to set up a high speed link over the 10.5 miles which sounds expensive and probably tricky with the regulators.

Perhaps I haven't understood yet ...
