Getting kicked out of KDM when trying to log in

When I try to log in using kdm, I get kicked back to the KDM main login screen, After a couple attempts I can login but this is very annoying.

Is there a log file or something I could look at?

Where should I begin to look for a solution to this?

I am using Slackware 13 and Xfce.

Thanks.

You might try using GDM, or XDM, as a login manager in place of KDM. If the problem continues, it isn't a login manager problem. This page might help you in switching to another LM:

Some suggestions that may help:
1. Stop kdm and run startx or startxfce4. You will see the errors on the console if they come up.
2. Create a new default user and see if you are able to log in that way.
I do not know where the logs are but then I guess these suggestions would help.

You could also rename the .kde4 directory of your user (e.g. to .kde4-old). KDE will create a new one from scratch, so no worries here, and any odd changed defaults will revert to the original values.
