getting external monitor to work when the lcd is busted on laptop

I have a compaq cq-60 with a broken lcd monitor. I want to hook it up to an external monitor but everything I've read says I ahve to adjust the display settings on the laptop to configure the external monitor. Well I can't do this because I can't see anything on the laptop screen. I've tried the fn+ f4 button-doesn't work. My external monitor displays no vga input then goes to sleep. HELP

According to Compaq's web site, fn + F4 should cycle you through three states.

1. Internnal display

2. Internal display + external display

3. External display.

If this is not working, I would suspect you have more wrong than just the display.

The only other suggestion I have is to go to the Qompaq web site. You need the full model number. There are 466 models that have Compaq cq-60 as part of their name. Get the correct one for your model. Then the web site may be able to help with documentation.

What happened to kill the display?
