getting an optimum OS for my intel pentium 3 750 MHz ,128 mb ram computer
Hi,
i have a comp with the above mentioned specification. I have mandriva linux 10.1 installed on my comp with kde as my default (viewer???)... and the comp slows down a lot... also my mouse a 3 button mouse without a scroll doesnt seem to work whereas it used to on Windows. I want some suggestions on the best distro with my specifications and a good number of programs that can be run... also havent used icewm or things like that...does open office work on that? Thanx Shyam |
Yeah, you might want to try a lightweight window manager. Fluxbox is one, Blackbox is another (those are similar) and IceWM is another. There are more out there you can try.
You'll be able to run OpenOffice.org under any desktop environment/window manager, as long as you have whatever pacakges OO.org requires. As for your scroll wheel, search the forum for this as it has been asked a lot. You will need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config (depending on whether you're using X.org or XFree86) file to make the changes. |
@ Mr.Nylex.
Thanx a lot for helping me with my doubts.. I think he misunderstood me! i dont have a scroll mouse..i have a three button mouse which doesnt work ... A logitech mouse with scroll (that i have borrowed for the moment )seems to work. Will try out what you said anyway Thanx again |
Oops, yeah I misread your post. Sorry!

@peter
I installed everything i got on a mandriva 10.1 cd or rather their 3 cd package |
Mandrake 10.1
Mandrake is an excellent distro.......except for 10.1.
10.0, 10.2 (2005LE) are great distros. Have been using both for about 10 months now. Almost any distro running KDE desktop is going to require 256mb RAM if you want it to be fast. 750mhz CPU is fine. Try disableing any unnecessary services. good luck |
If you're good at computer (I mean, you know well in it), you should compile kernel to improve performment of computer.
_http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/Kernel-Build-HOWTO.html Because default kernel (gone with distro) can use for many processors type and configuration so it don't suite much in your pc |
@trio3b
so... what do i do for changing my version to 10.2? i dont want to format again and burn three more cds. about disabling...how do i find our if they are pretty unnecessary like amarok or something or if they are some system processes. thanx |
@caspervn
Well..i am just a newbie in the purest sense. I have been using windows for the past four years.Now i really wwant to decrease my dependency on it and want to switch to linux full time...so i have both the OSs now.. I dont know much about programming (and am trying hard to start)though the site you gave seems helpful ...(thanx for that!) |
