Getting a command to execute at Gnome startup
 

I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 and would like to execute a command at startup (as the subject implies). As I understand it, this is done from the "Sessions" applet under the "Startup Programs" tab. I have added a command to the list which I know works, because I tested it in the shell and then cut and paste it into the command prompt in this applet.

Of course, nothing appears to execute when I log into Gnome. I am the only user on this machine and I always log in using my account (not a superuser). The application is stored in my home folder, which my account has access to.

I guess my question is...

1. Am I doing this correctly, and if so...
2. Is this the best way to make a program autorun at startup using Ubuntu/Gnome?
3. ...and if so, is there a log I can look at to determine the point of failure in executing this command? I ask because, I receive no error messages, it just doesn't run.

1. Yes, I think you are doing it correctly
2. If you wish to use it when Gnome starts, yes. I don't see why you should start playing with external schedulers or such things.
3. I'm not aware of such a log, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't exist..I hope somebody knows this better than I do

There's this option "Save session automatically" (might not be written exactly like that) in the Session control window (used to be at least, last time I used Gnome). Try enabling it and see if that helps; this sounds like a long shot but you probably don't lose anything. It simply means that your session gets saved, for example if you're running some apps or doing something particular when you log out, the desktop comes back exactly as you left it when you log back in.

Believe it or not, that seemed to do the trick. Thanks for the tip, both of my commands are running now.
