get "can't connect to X11 window server using :0.0"

I'm using Debian Linux with a virtual hosting/user-mode linux hosting firm - so it's a "headless" server that I remotely SSH into.

I get the error message "can't connect to X11 window server using :0.0" when running the eXist installer (a native XML database I'm trying to install). I assume that this is to do with the headless server.

But what can I do to get the installer to work? How can I trick it into thinking I have the X11 windows.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers.

Andy

If you need X to install that on your headless server your going to have to export DISPLAY=computer:0.0 where computer is the hostname of a machine that does have an xserver running on it that you have access too.

I found an interesting point on the Macromedia support site. With JDK 1.4 Djava.awt.headless=true may help. But that means I have to install JDK 1.4, and that's going to be fun and games for me!

You can try enabling ssh X forwarding/tunneling but you will need an X server running on your local computer. The its just a matter of running ssh -X when you connect.
