geometry mismatch?? What does this mean?

I have been having problems getting any bootloader to work so I have been trying to diagnose the error code that lilo produced (L with half a screen of 01).

From the sites Ive visited they say "This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry mismatch" what does geometry mismatch mean and how can I correct it. The drive in question is a IBM 30gb drive and I have ran the IBM "Drive Fitness Test" to check for bad sectors and it did not find any (are there any good open source utilities that I can check this with?).

Thanks for any help you can offer

Remeber new to linux but fairly competent in DOS and Windows

If you have Partition Magic you should run it. Usually it gives an error about geometry mismatches and fixes them if you let it as it loads. This fixed another guys problem today after he updated Win2K to WinXP on a dual boot machine.
