"New to Linux?"

"Gentoo?"

Ummm..... pick another distro.

Trust me: I've been using Gentoo for years. Great system... love it... but you seek to run before you walk.

Step back from your immediate objective ... put it on the shelf for now ... and study this system called Linux, first.

Please understand that I say this with not-the-slightest-bit of disrespect for you!

Hear, Hear! I'll second that sentiment. Try Fedora, CentOS, Knoppix, Kanotix, or PCLinuxOS first. Get your feet wet. Learn command-line operations, as well as application installation from GUI and command-line installation techinques. Give yourself a few months with less demanding distros before you take the dive off the high board.

You'll thank yourself later. Then try Gentoo. That will get you excited.

Then look toward Slackware or Linux From Scratch to really cut your teeth.

(notice from my profile that I haven't made it there yet).
