Gentoo kernel config woes
 

Gentoo requires the enabling of dev fs and automount support for installation, as stated in the install doc from gentoo.org. Yet the dev fs and automount options in menuconfig are misssing. I went into .config and turned on the flags for both. Then went to compile the kernel. Compilation gave me an error in the base.c file (I would post it, but it's way too long and in the gentoo install screens). I tried different combinations with the flags enabled/disabled for the dev fs and automount options, and still an error. The only way the kerenel will compile is with the flags both off, but leaves me without dev fs support... I've tried installing without it before, and gentoo wouldn't work. Please help, as I don't think I can live without "emerge" much longer... too... many... dependencies... can't install... anything... in linux... ack!

Make sure the very first option , Code maturity level options - Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drviers is selected.

Interesting. Will that give me a better idea of what kind of errors are occuring? Do you reccomend turning on those flags before compiling the kernel? Thanks for the reply, by the way.

turn it on and go to the file system section, you should then see devfs.

That's great! Thanks for the advice... do you know why they left this out of the gentoo docs? Or is it in there, and I'm just a blithering idiot?

Not exactly sure, havent read the gentoo docs fully, but I suppose there's already many good kernel documentations available therefore there's no need for them to create another one.
