General Questions & Red Hat 9?

Firstly im running a PIII 450mhz with 192mb ram, 8gig hdd, 16mb voodoo banshee by gigabyte.

I installed SuSE 8.0 on this machine and it runs alright, but i want a newer version of linux, so im getting Redhat 9.0. Is this new redhat going to run on my system??

Secondly, I have always used Windows, and I know how important it is in windows to do defrags and scandisks. Are these neccesary for Linux???

If so what progs do I use?

thanks

RedHat 9.0 should install with little or no problems considering an older version of SuSe installed.

Due to the linux filestructures(i.e. ext2, ext3, ReiserFS) you do not need to perform any type of defragment.

Scandisks are always a good idea, however most modern distros (anything you'll likely be using) have this already taken care of for during the bootup sequence. Defrags are a thing of the past my friend.

As for going from SuSE 8.0 to RH9 you won't see much of a difference as far as speed. RH won't have any problems if SuSE didn't basically. They aren't that far apart that it will matter. I'd personally stick with SuSE and just upate a few things if needed.

Welcome to LQ.
