General file/Install directory recommendations

Hi,

I'm trying to understand the typical/standard directories used when installing applications and setting up a development environment.

Here are more specific questions.
- Where do I install applications like OpenOffice which are common to all users?
- Where do I install applications specific to just me as a user?
- Where do I put common 3rd party development libraries like boost?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Ash.

PS: My system is a HP dvt6 notebook running Slackware 12.2.

If you are compiling from source:

./configure
make
make install

If you are using a package manager you just install the package. You don't really need to know where to install anything. It pretty much just goes in the right place.

Guess I'll ask a more specific question (I'm not compiling from source).

When installing OpenOffice I have to provide a directory. Should I use /opt?
But I see other applications like Firefox in /usr/lib. Is that a better choice?

Thanks,

Ash.

Distro: Slackware 13.0

Ok, found some useful links myself here on LQ.

/opt or /usr/local
/opt or /usr ?
Where to install software /opt? or /usr/local?

It's odd that I didn't find these earlier when I searched LQ. I found it in a round about way through a google search. Interestingly, though the LQ search for "/opt or /usr" doesn't find these useful links, if I create a new post and find related threads it does find it.
