Hi. I'm a complete newbie trying to wean myself off the windoze te@t. Have been given Redhat 7.1 to try out which has no display driver in setup for my card.Just get flashing text logon - no X. Do I d/load: .rpm,src.rpm or tar. Do I configure XF86Config first and then edit using vim and what do I download. Have tried NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.rh71up.i386.rpm and NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i386.rpm, edited the XF86Config-just get error. Also *_1251.*.rpm. ALSO plse explain i386,i686,smp etc?Current system:
Athlon xp 1800+,GeForce 4 MX420. Would appreciate any HELP!Ta.

Firstly, if you're a complete newbie, I wouldn't use vim, its not very user friendly - or rather not very intuitive for a new user. Secondly, ~I would go with a more up to date distro if you can. That version of XFree probably won't support the gf4 driver. Try RH9 or Mandrake 9/9.1 for starters if you can.

Get the latest nvidia driver too, it now comes in a single download with an installer.
