geeting started with linux


hi all,
i am new to linux os.
i have no idea about shell and kernel.
please do suggest me some ebooks so that i should get started with linux.

Hi and welcome to LinuxQuestions! A good starting point is The Linux Command Line. I also suggest to start reading the official documentation of the linux distribution of your choice. Regarding the kernel, it's a bit advanced topic but you can take a look at Linux Kernel in a Nutshell. You might keep it in your library for future reference. Enjoy Linux!

Here are three references I've found useful:

http://linux.about.com/. It's oriented to Ubuntu, but it's full of good info and, being a website, is amply illustrated. It might be a good starting point for a general orientation.

http://tille.garrels.be/training/tldp/. Machtelt Garrels Intro to Linux. I still keep a printed copy on my bookshelf.

http://www.slackbook.org/. Slackware oriented, but excellent on the basics, such as file structure, permissions, and the like.
