Gconf settings missing

After the successful installation of linux my system was rebooted and opened as root user and got my window with blank screen showing only my computer and trash icons and the rest of the tool bars are invisiblewith an the error like unable to find the Gconf seetings could anyone help me in solving this issue

What do you mean by opened as root user? Are you saying you are logging in as the root user? That is a no-no, you should be logging in as a normal user, and using sudo or su to do general system maintenace, configuring services, and installing packages. What distro are you using?
