gcc problem in hardy while installation of vlc

just after installing hardy in windowsxp,when i tried to install vlc9.8 in hardy,during the ./configure stage,it reported an error saying gcc cannot produce an object file.what may b the problem?i dont hav fast net connection to install using aptget install.

You really should post the exact error you received rather than your interpretation of it. Also, look in config.log to see what test program failed and why. That might help you figure out the problem.
