Gcc 3.3

I'm working with some older code, and I downgraded GCC to 3.3 (Makefile uses CC=gcc-3.3). However, now I'm getting an error that says "gcc-3.3: Objective-C compiler not installed on this system"

Am I missing a call out, or do I need to download an earlier version of gobc?

You are missing out on an earlier version apparently. Esp if you are following the distro's packaging system.

You did not mention what distro you are using. Whenever you ask a question it helps a lot if you state the distro, version, and arch (F8-64bit). If the code you are actually trying to compile is on the net, a link to the software often helps a lot too.

Some distros (most RH based) offer compatibility libs to take care of this type of issue. You add the compatibility lib but continue to use the base compiler. This allows you to compile source that was written for gcc2.96 in gcc4.1.2 .

I'm using the latest distro of Ubuntu, version 8.04 on a 64-bit processor. I am trying to compile MUD software (specifically that available at, but the software won't compile under GCC 4 without substantial modification.

Thanks for the responses so far.
