gcc 3.3.1 and kernel 2.2.x

are there any known issues compiling kernels 2.2.24, 2.2.25, or 2.2.26 with gcc 3.3.1? i keep attempting to do such things and continually get messages that string.h wont compile correctly. ive checked it vis-a-vis the version i have on another system that i have sucessfully compiled 2.2.25 on and the file is identical. but on that system i was using gcc 2.95.3 i believe. any help, am i barking up the wrong tree, why wont this kernel compile?

Here is a Quote from the Linux From Scratch book
This is an older release of GCC which we are going to install for the
purpose of compiling the Linux kernel in Chapter 8. This version is
recommended by the kernel developers when you need absolute stability.
Later versions of GCC have not received as much testing for Linux kernel
compilation. Using a later version is likely to work, however, we
recommend adhering to the kernel developer's advice and using the version
here to compile your kernel.
Older kernels like you suggest, will compile better with Gcc-2.95.........
good luck.
