Gave up waiting for root device (debian) Kali Linux 2017.3

Hi Guys,

First time user here. I plan to use 2 OS Win 10 and teh Kali linux 2017.3. I never encountered any error during the installation. I successfully finished it. Unfortunately the linux OS does not boot.

I am receiving an error something like this;

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
— Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
— Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
— Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
— Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/SDC5 does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v.1.20.2 (debian 1:1.20.2-1ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for list of built-in commands.

help me with this please. TIA.

Have you read the Kali Sticky at the top of the Forum here?

https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ad-4175614092/

What have you tried? Where are you stuck?

No, you finished it, you did not successfully finish it since Kali won't boot.

Why are you using Kali? Are you doing penetration testing?

https://docs.kali.org/introduction/s...use-kali-linux

Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testers and security specialists, and given its unique nature, it is NOT a recommended distribution if you’re unfamiliar with Linux or are looking for a general-purpose Linux desktop distribution for development, web design, gaming, etc.

I don't understand why so many new users want to use Kali. It is inappropriate for new users. Use something like Mint or Ubuntu.

Then it would seem that you have not read the Kali Sticky thread, and specifically some of these parts of it:
  • Because of the above, Kali Linux has been designed for ICT security professionals and is not recommended for Linux newbies/beginners. This is because Kali Linux requires a good understanding of both networking and the administration of Linux based operating systems.

    If you are not well-versed in administrating Linux based operating systems, you are strongly advised to choose a far more suitable Linux distribution, as Kali Linux will not be suitable for the newbie/beginner.
  • The best places to start are the following, in the following order;

    https://www.kali.org/kali-linux-documentation/
    https://forums.kali.org/
You stated that you wish to use Kali as a second OS, where the first OS is Windows 10. Kali is not a desktop distribution and it is not to be used as a second OS. Kali has a very specific reason for existing, penetration testing. Refer to their website for more details about how to properly use Kali.

This is a matter of finding the right tool for the job. Can we ask how you came to find out about Kali Linux and what you really intend for it?

Fluffy_Lescure 01-02-2018 06:39 AM

I'm not here to find out why I shouldn't use kali i'm here to fix the boot problem.But either way I will be using kali to hack Wi-Fi, phones, etc and to know how most hackers gain access to a device remotly

Turbocapitalist 01-02-2018 06:44 AM

Kali is not for beginners.

You will learn better on nearly any other distro. You will also have the same capablities on those other distros. The same tools are available on them and they are set up to be very easy to install and learn. So if you are after the tools that Kali has, it'd be easier to set up a regular distro to get at them. If you are after running Kali as an end in itself you'd still need to train up on Mint first and then Debian before attempting Kali.

Again, can we ask how you came to find out about Kali Linux and what you really intend for it?

You should seek assistance from the Kali site and their forums. There are few, to no LQ members who are equipped to help you. It's not a lack of willingness or judgement, but instead there really are not many members here who use Kali regularly enough that they can provide you with assistance.

And if you intend to use Kali for penetration testing, then installing it on your machine is an incorrect action. Once again, seek some guidance from the developers of Kali as to best how to use their OS.

Kali Linux is a Debian-derived Linux distribution designed for digital forensics and penetration testing.
so you're going to be going into the spy business? If I remember correctly that is more curtailed to a usb "live" type distro so one can be be/play super spy.

Must be there logo that gets so many to want to install it on a hdd, All Linux distro's,
You can install penetration SF on any Linux Distro. You might want to try different distro, then install some Virtual Software and install OS'es on to that, until you get use to installing process, then you too can even play on that for practicing becoming a super spy ... set up some Virtual Worlds then practice penetrating them. :D

hydrurga 01-02-2018 06:49 AM

Can you point us to the installation instructions that you followed please, tell us what device you are installing Kali onto, and also whether the target device is partitioned or you will be using the whole device.

@Fluffy_Lescure,

Your not trying to use Kali Linux FOR it's intended purposes - as stated by other members. Therefore it is not appropriate for members to try and help you with Kali Linux.

We cannot help you with using it for it's intended purposes.

Please just pick a different distro and we'll be more than happy to try and help you with it. (I will myself, if you would like)

Well found. We've been trolled. What a waste of time.

Isn't this a violation of LQ's rules? (I'm not sure, but I reported #11 anyway.)

Oh, and I just noticed the old post is listed as first "Similar Threads", at bottom of page!!! (I didn't even need to toss the error into Goo!!!)

It can't be because I didn't post in that one. ;)

rtmistler 01-03-2018 06:34 AM

The question is not against LQ rules.

Posting exact duplicates is obviously not good forum behavior. Both threads are now closed.

Thank you "!!!" for detecting the duplicates. Nice work.
