Gateway laptop with sound problem
I am completely new to Linux and this is my first question:
I have a Gateway M210 laptop with an Intel 82801Db-ICH4 sound card that came with the system. I have installed Mandriva 2009 with KDE. I've checked the KMix to make sure that nothing is muted. Everything seems to indicate ALSA sound is on, but there is no sound coming out of the system. I have not observed any other problems with my installation. I did a search on the forum here and found a lot of threads with similar problems on a variety of configurations, but other than the threads saying to check the mixer, I admit I did not understand much of what was being said. Suggestions will be much appreciated. |
Wow, I did a search on that and it came up as an IDE controller, a LAN card, and a sound card! Could you post the output of the command:
Code:
lspci -v Quote:

I am using KDE, not GNOME.
I tried playing a music CD using KsCD and did not hear any music. KsCD does not seem to have the same controls as you are refering to in order to check the sound card, but KMix is telling me I have the card I indicated earlier. KMix also shows everything unmuted and unchecked. Under the menu, I chose "Run Command" and entered the command you requested. It promptly closed the window leaving me no opportunity to capture anything to post here. This looks like another area in which I could use some instruction. Thanks for trying to help. I would really like to learn how to use this system. |
It shouldn't matter whether you have KDE or gnome, the post I quoted used gnome, but it should be similar in KDE. In KMix, are there any options that you can find similar to changing the output or turning off output to the headphones, etc?
I'm currently working on sound issues on my own machine as well, though I haven't been able to check changing the output switches as I am at work. I do, however, get sound through the headphones. Could you try plugging in headphones and see if you get any sound through them? As for the command, you will need to open up a terminal window. I don't know how the menus are set up in KDE on Mandriva, try checking under "Accessories" or "System"? Once you have a terminal window open, then you can run lspci -v and copy the output to post here. I haven't used Linux in a while, so I'm sort of starting fresh myself. |
KMix has about a dozen check boxes which I played with, but no joy.
I tried headphones and no head phones. I found Konsole Terminal under Tools.
