I'm guessing something whet wrong when I ended the live session abnormally.i can't get it to open again. Should I erase usb and try again?

Yes. Just read carefully and perform the steps. It is not difficult.

It might take time to load the installer and might appear that the system isn't doing anything or hanging.

I don't why your computer stopped working. As suggested the USB might of become corrupted when you performed a hard shutdown.

I suggest a lighter weight desktop or distribution might work better for your laptop. Mint Xfce may work better or try Bodhi or Antix.
