Gateway DX4850-41C does not shut off computer on quit.

In that thread I mentioned this problem:

One other item that has been ongoing before these last mint-mate-meta downloads. When I shut the computer down, The screen changes to the Little Linux Logo, on a blank screen, however I still have to manually shut the computer power off to get a complete shut down.

As this is unrelated to the original problem I decided to start a new Thread.

Was this happening in Windows 7, before Linux.? No.

Was this happening in the KDE version,? YES

I burned a new DVD and completely reinstalled the Linux Mate version, and I still have the same problem.

Any suggestions, further questions etc.. Thanks.

The devs are working on this problem, it is hard to pin down because it is not consistent. I have 3 machines running MATE and 2 of them have this problem. Read this https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate...ager/issues/53 and post any information you have with this issue at MATE's github. You will notice I have posted in this bug report as well and quite frankly wasn't happy they were ignoring Debian Wheezy (they have since done some work on Wheezy but the issue still remains).

I have read this in another page. that going to the 1.6.0. version fixed the problem.

Disclaimer: I wouldn't recommend doing this because you will end up running unsupported software. Mixing versions can create problems so you may inadvertently break other parts of your OS.

Ok if you must try this you can either:
1. enable the repository for Petra in your sources.list and then force Mint to use the package from MATE 1.6, or
2. enable the MATE repository for Ubuntu Saucy (which Petra is based on) by following the instructions on the MATE wiki.

Once you do either of these things you will need to pin the package because it will update to the 1.8 package if you don't.

I am interested if you have followed the advice already given here, such as posting of your problem in the MATE github page, because it appears as though you are reading material but not letting us know where you got it from. If you are using other sources, on the internet, for help it is a good idea to actually post a link to the information directly so we can see if it is good advice and advise you accordingly.

Other than the extra step, does a "HARD Shut Down" have any ill effect on the computer itself, if done continually.?

Thanks for that Harvey, I forgot about Sunweaver's initial comment. I'll give it a go on my other machine and see if it does indeed help but it still leaves a problem of unsupported software later on.

I generally tell people to include things like there hardware, exactly what has happened, and exactly what they have done to fix it. Sometimes people try many things to fix problem that just make things worse so knowing what they have done is important.

I would suggest computers have a soft shutdown option for a very good reason and that helps with longevity of the system. I leave my i7 Haswell, which is one machine that has this problem, running while I am home and only shut it down on days I am working away from home because of this. Apart from that I do not really know the answer to your question.

In a nutshell, here was my problem. Linux Mint17 Qiana Mate 64bit, when shutting down, would not shut off the main computer.. The desktop closed but I had to manually hold the stop button until it shut down.

Now, I have two other computers running Linux Mint 16 Petra Mate 32 bit, and I have no shutdown problem with that download. A couple days ago I asked, can I use the 32 bit OS on a 64 bit computer, and the consensus was yes..

I downloaded the Qiana 17 Mint Mate and burned my new DVD.. Booted up the new DVD, and installed the system on the 64 bit computer.. Wonder of Wonders, my system shuts down perfectly.. As I had backed up all my files and photos, I have now re-loaded most everything, and so far I am happy camper..

I wanted to share this with everyone on this forum, just in case someone else is having the same problem.

The problem isn't a 32 vs 64 bit problem. I have a 32 bit machine that has this problem as well as a 64 bit machine that has this problem. It can happen in Wheezy and Jessie (Debian), I am not sure how many (Ubuntu based) Linus Mint versions it happens on. You can dual boot 1 machine with 2 installs of the exact same version and it can happen on 1 install and not on the other. As far as I can tell some of it at least depends on the installation itself and how the installer sets the machine up at installation time.

Well, that puts yet another twist on this problem.. I have been told by the people in the "Know" that the problem is very spasmodic, which makes it difficult to put a finger on.. Your point seems to verify this very fact. I am however very happy that it has worked for me.. For the time being, i am going with the idea "If it is not broken, don't fix it." I'm up and running and I will leave well enough alone until I see there is a better fix..
