Gaming Install/Setup Question:

Hello

I am a "Newbie" to the Linux world, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a system that originally ran Windows XP64 as its primary. I divided the partitions of the drive to duel boot the system as I learn Ubuntu.

I am a gaming fan of "Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare", I run it on Windows but cannot seem to get it going on the Ubuntu OS. I've read everything I could find, setup "Wine", and "Q4Wine" even tried using "Terminal" to configure the machine with a few reported configs from the internet that worked on simular PCs. I get the intro to run, hear the music see the introduction to the game, but then it just fails, I've even installed the updated drivers for Ubuntu concerning my Video cards.

My system is:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz with a Level 2 cache of 6144 KB, I have 4 Gigs of Kingston HyperRam 9600 MHz,with a swap of 8 Gigs,I have a Western Digital VelociRaptor 10,000 RPM SATA drive with a 16 MB Cache, and two DVD drives, one is BlueRay, I run both wireless and wired Nics, the wired is a Gigabyte the wireless is 54G,my Video Graphics cards are ATI Sapphire HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E, running on an SLI Board Giga-byte GA-EP45-UD3P Copper board.

I built the system from scratch and am enjoying the Ubuntu but am distressed that I cannot get my favorite game to run on it. I have more to say but don't want to overwhelm my first question. So, can anyone help me out?

Thank You,

Joe (Yogi-Wan)

From the command line:
Code:

glxinfo | grep rendering
Post the output you get, thanks.

What happens when you run the wine command in terminal? do you actually get anywhere with the game or does it immediately crash?

also are you running this from the windows partition or did you copy the game folder over to the drive running linux? I personally had issues running WOW from the windows directory but when I copied it over to my home folder it seemed to have cleared up the issue I was having.

Not that this is a fix just an idea or comparison of a similar (and I use that term loosely - Cause I don't know where the problem exists) issue more of just information gathering.

androidd,

what happens is the game splash screen comes up, I hear the music, I see the menu, it goes to the choice menu to choose game type, then it just turns black.

I read your response and if I get you right you are saying to copy the entire game directory from Windows to my Linux folder "Home" and it might work? I ran the install from Linux to one of the linux folders on my "Home" drive and made a sub directory, then ran Wine to configure it to play, but no go.

Try running it from the command line and see what errors and warnings you get, if any.
