Gaining Root Access on BitVise Client
How to you set up BitVise SFTP Client for Root access on a Linux Server? I type in username root@myserver.com and it keeps saying denied access..Windows 10. When I use FileZilla in Ubuntu, it works fine. The reason and only reason I need this is to edit my PhP and HTML files in /var/www/ Directory and to upload files there as well.
Especially in the case of an SSH-level authentication failure, the SSH server log entries will contain important diagnostic information. It is necessary to inspect the SSH server log entries in this case.
Do you find anything in the log?
Note that you can set up verbose logging on the ssh server.
I also wonder if your Windows box has access at all. What happens if you connect as a normal user?

I had some brain fog....I went into terminal and simply gained ownership of ( chown /var/www eodcrafter) and now I am able to edit all of my webpage files. I never did find anything about being root on sftp under Bitvise client. It does have info on how to set it up on WCP, but it's strongly discouraged and I am gonna reedit my ssh config to not allow root login under ssh as recommended... Thanks!

Now that's very strange, even after I disabled root login under ssh config, I am still able to log in as root under FileZilla on Ubuntu to the server. Is this perhaps a security flaw?

The way to set up Bitvise SSH client to allow SFTP connections with root priveleges is as follows:
1.) Open the Bitvise SSH client profile
2.) Go to the SFTP TAB
3.) In the Subsystem field enter the following:
sudo /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
4.) Save your profile and try conencting to sftp. You should now have access to the entire filesystem as 'root'.
Important Note: My environment is an ec2 instance in AWS.
The instance is running Amazon Linux 2.
For my sftp server the path is: /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
Your path may be different depending on the Linux distribution in use.
