gaim upgrade

So I installed Linux awhile back, and this is the first time I've tried upgrading something I already have. I'm working on the newest version of Gaim. I have tar.gz package downloaded and extracted into a folder but I'm really not sure where to go from there. How do I make sure I overwrite my old version and stuff? Running Suse 9.2. Thanks

use yast to uninstall the old package. if its a source package u need to compile it, for most thing its
./configure
make
su
make install
butyoud probably be better off finding another suse rpm than compiling it from source.

If I use an RPM should I still uninstall the old one with yast? Any ideas where I can find a GAIM rpm for SuSE 9.2?

a search on LQ.org yields a link to this site. theres suse 9.2 on left and the gaim rpm for v1.3.0 is there.
