What version of gAIM are you running? AFAIK, only 0.70 and 0.71 can launch MSN or Yahoo!. So i recommend updating. If you do have the latest version. The reason MSN isn't connecting is because you don't have SSL support installed. Check this page out Hope that helps ^_^

also, didn't both yahoo and msn disabled 3rd party client connections to their services? or did gaim come up with a way of going around that problem?

You may have noticed that Yahoo has ceased working. The fix in 0.69 (of which (slightly broken) source packages are currently available) was not adequate. We're working on the new authentication method now; hopefully it will be cracked soon.

Our friends over at Cerulean Studios managed to break my speed record at cracking Yahoo authentication schemes with an impressive feat of hackery. They sent it over and here it is in Gaim 0.70. However, certain details of the authentication scheme depend on the challenge string the server sends us, and there's really no way to tell what it does until Yahoo starts sending new challenge strings. So you can expect a few more breakages to come soon. I wouldn't sign offline if I were you. Peep the ChangeLog.

Gaim still works with MSN provided you're using a recent version (0.71 is our current version), and you have SSL libraries properly installed. We support either Mozilla NSS or GNUTLS. Check the FAQ for more information.

If you're up for a bit of risk in your life, go here:

http://autopackage.org/

they have gaim packages for any distro that will automatically install themselves. Just download the .package files and stick them in the same directory, then run gaim-0.70.package
