Try starting it from a terminal window that way you may see some error message when it dies. If you do, post it here.

Hi. When you run gaim from a terminal, error messages are supposed to be printed on the screen if there is a problem. Post those errors here.

Is it just minimizing to the notification area? I think the default behavior of gaim is to do that, but if you do not have the notification area on a task bar you do not see it. I seem to remember thinking gaim was closing as soon as I logged in a while back only to find this is what was happening. If this is the case then it will not display any errors in terminal as there is no errors.

EDIT: To add the notification area right click on your taskbar and choose add new item. In Gnome I believe it is called 'notification area'. In XFCE it is called 'system tray'. I am not sure what it is called in KDE and others.

So you're saying that if you start it from a terminal it closes without any sort of error message displayed in the terminal at all? No sort of message? I find that a little hard to believe.

Does it just return to the prompt with nothing? Or do you just see a blinking cursor with no prompt?

@lizzie123

You might want to fill in your profile or tell us which distribution you are using as well. So far, it is not possible to help you: You don't post any error messages, you give very little detail... I am not even sure if you know what a terminal is. If you don't, there is nothing to be ashamed of either. We all been there before. But if you don't help us to help you, we will all be wasting our times and you will soon be frustrated and give up fixing your problem all together.

Again, help us to help you. Do as every member suggest you. If you are not sure what to do, ask. Don't be afraid. Also, giving details of your distribution always helps.

Just saying "it crashes" or "it gives an error" simply won't be enough. Not even close...

Regards!
