Using GA-Z87-DS3H LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard, Haswell i3 cpu.
what Ver. of Lunix well work and where can i get it?

Any current kernel works fine - most distros will have a kernel released this year; maybe not Debian stable.

I figured I might need a new NIC, so I don't use the onboard NIC, nor do I use the onboard graphics port.

Every distro has a page there, with links to its site and on-line reviews.

So which to use? They differ in
1. Where they lie on the scale from enterprise (tried and trusted software, nothing very knew) to bleeding-edge (all the latest stuff, but the only guarantee is that when it breaks, you get to keep the pieces). It's best to keep to the middle of the scale if you're a beginner.
2. How long they're supported for, before you need to install a new version: anything from 9 months to 5 years; the rolling-release distros constantly update, so you never re-install.
3. Which GUI they supply as standard: unlike Windows, you get a choice of very different styles. It's often best to get a distro with its default GUI, as that's the one that most of the developers have been working on.

Good choices are
1. If you like the sort of interface that looks like a tablet or phone, look at the Gnome desktop: Ubuntu Gnome is the best, with the current version supported for 5 years.
2. If you want something more traditional and configurable, but with lots of eye-candy, try the KDE desktop: PCLinuxOS is a good rolling-release distro.
3. For a traditional interface without a lot of over-excited icons bouncing and zooming, look at Mint with Mate — another with 5 years support.

I see i have a lot to learn. Downloaded Fedora 20 and get kernel error when i try to run it.
But on and old Ausu V2A-VM motherboard it run with few problems.

64 bit Trying to install, it seem to start ok i get the (f)logo on the screen then after about 45 sec. at the bottom of the screen the
error message " kernel error " then it locks up and the only way out is to turn off the power.

Hmmm - I have a HD3 which is a similar spec'd Haswell board with an 1150 i7, and it as been fine for several months. Mint, Fedora, Arch ...
I would have thought F20 would be ok - as it happens I downloaded F20 again yesterday, and just checked to see if the kernel had been refreshed. Doesn't look like it - 3.11.10 (versus 3.15.8 on this Fedora laptop). Would think it would be ok tho'.

We need some more messages. When you boot the USB, highlight the "Start Fedora Live" option and hit the <Tab> key like it says. You'll get the kernel command line listed with the cursor at the end. Go left and delete the "quiet" and "rhgb" options and hit <Enter> to boot it.
You'll see a bunch of messages scroll by, most of which we don't care about - if/when it fails again, take a photo of the screen and post that. If LQ won't allow an attachment, load it on one of the online services and post a link.

Many question?

Fedora was downloaded, verified and burned to a CD, would a flash drive be better?
What’s the best status of the hard drive to install too, new blank, partitioned, or will linux set up partitions when installed?
With the CD in the machines are turned on and the results is not at the same!!
On each one (Start Fedora Live) is on the screen. On the old Ausu board it works just like your
Advised. Tab is and option, and I did just like you advised and it boots from CD and runs F20,
Picks audio video, plays wave files and screen is HiRes,even picks USB WiFi and gets on line just fine.
But has at least 2 problems, the screen goes black then comes back on and just keeps doing it.
And when I try to install can’t get past where it ask for language I highlight English and enter
But with no results.
With the Gigabyte board when (Start Fedora Live) is highlighted <Tab> is not a option, only <e> for edit and <c> for command line. If you choose c then tab is available,but when you tab you get many line of commands and none of witch have “rhgb” or “quiet”.
On the gigabyte board if you start Fedora live the screen is HiRes with the (f) logo and I hear a click in the speakers like it picked up video and audio? Then you see install or close, but keyboard or mouse don’t work. At the bottom of screen “a problem in the kernel has bee” I guess that it was going to print “been”
But that is when it locks up. Maybe it will not run on the Gigabyte board I have.

Try Debian aeast you can switch consoles (ctrl+f4) & read everything that's happening including error messages.

CD is fine - the differnce you see on the boot screen is because of the UEFI BIOS the Gigabyte has; sorry, I should have tested that.
With the "Start Fedora Live" highlighted, hit <e> to edit (as you did). Go down to the "linuxefi" line, and scroll to the far right - the "quiet rhgb" should be the last two options (may be off the screen initially). Delete them and hit F10.
Lets's see what you get.

I'm inclined to agree with @Habitual - did you verify the download ?.
Instead of the above, from the boot screen highlight "Test this media & start Fedora Live" - hit <e> and remove the "quiet rhgb" from the linuxefi line, and hit F10.
You'll get a percentage tick over as the check is run (couple of minutes on my system) - then a message that it has completed - and a result; better be "PASS".

IT WAS THE Logitech TRACK BALL!!!

The clue was i never had a mouse on screen, so puged in USB wireless mouse and and was able to insatll F20.
This post was sent using F20. still sez kernel error and i have sent a reoprt.
The great thing here is no cost but time and no trying to deal with MS!!!

I thank all who helped me, i would never got it runing with out your help
