Fully Switching to linux [Gaming]
I want to fully switch to Linux, I really do, however gaming is what is holding me back. I have built my computer for gaming like an AMD quadcore and an ATI 5770. The games I play do not run natively in Linux. I was wondering if it is possible to play modern games (Games of the past two or so years) in VBox or any other vitural OS software.
No, I do not want to dual boot, it is either just Linux or no switch. |

I'm sure you could also use Xen, VMWare etcetera just as well - maybe look at some of the threads in the LQ virtualization forums to get you started ;) Cheers, Yas |
Not a gamer, but at work I tried running Solidworks CAD software (which is also graphics intensive) in an XP virtual machine and the performance was sluggish and choppy, almost unusable. You may have better luck (or you may be able to get some of the games running Cedega or Wine).
Most other things seem to run fine in the VM, but not the CAD package. |
Hi,
Look at 'Best Games for Slackware or GNU/Linux ??' to get some insight on games & GNU/Linux. :hattip: |
Well I mean would I be able to play DX11 Games running on highest graphic settings at full speed. That is what I really care about.

They might work in WINE.
Contrary to popular belief, WINE does not emulate a Windows PC. Instead, it's a reimplementation of the Windows API, allowing the app to pretty much run natively in Linux. It's sometimes even reported that Windows apps run faster in WINE/Linux than Windows! Also, a VM is always a good option, as long as it won't slow you down too much. Just be sure to check the "Enable Hardware/3D Acceleration" checkbox or something like that in your VM if you want to do gaming. |
