full screen TEXT UI editor, file manager?
 

I'm an old DOS veteran, new to Linux. Have system up and running great (mdrake 9.2, very impressed). What I'm missing now is something to run in a root shell that would give me full screen editing or file managing. Think Kedit as ASCII. Don't know if anyone remotely remembers XTree for DOS, but it was a fast text based file manager. Layout would be similar to Konqueror, just TEXT UI instead of windowed.

Nobody be smart and say VIM or any of those ancient UNIX vertiical monstrosities. I'm talking basic text editing which needs about 10 functions and has no learning curve whatsoever.

mc and mcedit - or vfu. Those are dual and single pane. As far as trees, hit freshmeat and look for 'console file managers'. I like the dual-pane Norton Commander style, myself. mc's not really as good as some DOS counterparts, but it's still great.

You didn't install the developmental packages? As root, command:
urpmi gcc

OT, but just out of curiosity - do you have a huge list of categorized links, or some kind of automated script, or do you write those out each time? Just curious because I've got a *lot* of bookmarks, but I could never post 'em up real nice like that. :)

sick-o-windoze - Neglected to mention, too: I'd imagine mc is already on your system - just try typing 'mc' in a term or console. If not, fancypiper's told you how to install it.

A text file comes in handy for remembering stuff.

I learn something new or find a good link, I steal it and pop it into my linux file.

Ah. I've got my mozilla bookmarks and a directory full of scrap files and it's all kind of disorganized at the moment. ('Moment' being 'unit of time equivalent to years'.) But one of these days I'll get organized. :)
