FTP - setup issue
 

Hi guys:

I got this FTP issue, to be honest I'm not really sure if it's Linux or Windows issue. Okie we have Red Hat Linux as server, and I got some software running on it. Normal user still use Windows. Now this software I'm running is a thin client, so nothing is done on the Windows. But now there is a slight problem with Linux ftp. You see, all the help files (html) is sitting on Linux server under user1/help/pub/English. So if normal users not sure what to do, they can just click on the help buttom on the software that will automatically open up browser and load up ftp to the help page. Trouble is, each time they open up a new browser they have to enter the login name and password. I was just wondering if there a way to get rid of such issue. So once you signed on, you wont have to sign back on ever again. If that's too hard, at least can I make it so they dont have to sign in again for at least one day.

I think it's either the permission issue like user group? maybe? OR ftp is not set up correctly, but I'm just new to Linux so I don't know.

That sounds like an entirely local thing. Why not simply give them access to the directory from their windows boxes? You can do this with samba - no login required.

They do have access the entire access to user1 directory, and using RHL 5.3. I just don't see why won't it work on Linux for ftp.

We had the same set up running for years on a really old SCO Unix server. But ever since we convert to RHL, the ftp isnt working properly. Well.. for the help file at least

That sounds like a horrible solution...but whatever. If it's freely available to all, why login at all? Just use anonymous FTP if it's an internal network. But Samba would be a more sensible idea, for sure.

Samba mounts windows shares, and has much more potential for you. Using ftp is a bit like using snail mail to send something to someone at the next desk.
