ftp connection problem. It hangs on "entering passive mode"

I connect to an ftp server just fine. But I think it is supposed to forward me to a private IP and port once i'm there, like 192.168.1.75:4755. (Supposed to, like in a windows ftp program its fine.) This is a unix os i'm connected to by the way. so i can use certain commands when i get connected, but when I execute "dir" or "ls" it says "Entering Passive Mode <192.168.1.75, xx, xx>"
then it just hangs.
and then times out.
What's going on?

in dos, when i try the same connection and i try an "ls" command, it is successful--
"200 port command okay, and then 150 Opening ASCII no print mode data connection for ls -l"

then i am able to function.
i'm running stock rh9.

Turn passive mode off on the client side should most likely do the trick.

There's something rather strange about that FTP server directing you to a private IP address, unless you are also on the same private network. Are you able to ping the address 192.168.1.75 ?

If not my hypothesis is that the FTP server you're trying to connect to is misconfigured. Its possible that the Windows FTP clients work because they just ignore the redirection and just continue using the initial IP of the server.

Again this is only an hypothesis.
