ftp: connect: Connection timed out


when i run ftp 192.168.1.144

am getting error like

ftp: connect: Connection timed out

i installed ftp using "yum install vsftpd"

and then i run "service vsftpd start" command i got message [ok]

but still am getting error ftp: connect: Connection timed out

what was the problem???

Can you login to 192.168.1.144 if you want, using ssh for example? If you can, you can try connecting to the ftp server from there, see if it works. Maybe like this, assuming your ftp server is listening on port 21.

telnet localhost 21

If that works, you can try this from another machine on that network:

telnet 192.168.1.144 21

Please try that and report what happens.

when i run telnet localhost 21 it's giving output like

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 (vsFTP

and it's hanging here

I think that's a good result, it shows you have the ftp server running and can connect to it from localhost. What happens when you try connecting from a different machine? Did you check the logfiles? Do you have a firewall?

post your "iptables -L" output and "cat /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf" file contents.

Your server seems it doesn't allow 'outside' (from other computers/ IP's) connections to your FTP server port 21.
