fsck failed give root password for login SUSE Linux Enterprise 10

I will start by saying I have zero linux experience and have this problem on a personal laptop that I am the only admin to. I get the fsck failed. Please repair manually and reboot message. I have read literally hundreds of threads about how to change the root password but when I type "passwd" as I have seen, no characters show up. I have tried to go into failsafe mode but same results. I have gotten into a menu that says "boot options" but nothing I have found has worked. I have the recovery CD but am working from a mini laptop with no CD drive. I have seen posts about a GRUB menu but I don't know what that is.

Help Please!

You will need to get into the grub menu set it to boot to single user and set the init to /bin/bash to reset the password. However the fsck failing has nothing to do with not knowing your root password. What options did you use for fsck and how did you launch it?

If you are the only admin why do you not know the password?

when I type "passwd" as I have seen, no characters show up
If you mean no characters show when you type the password, yes that is correct and by design. You will not see any characters or asterisks or anything else. Just enter the password and hit the Enter key. It isn't really clear what your situation is though. Do you enter passwd and not see it on screen. If that's the case it could be a keyboard problem.
