Frying the Monitor??

I an new to linux...I'm running Mandrake 9.0 on a Dell Inspiron 2650.

I'm just wondering what all the warnings were about regarding HorizSync rate and Vert Refresh rate...they say you can really damage your monitor which obviously would cost more to lose on a laptop...what are some of the dangers involved. I used trial and error regarding sync rates and refresh rates...am I playing with fire??

It can be a risk.

Its probably best to try and find the recomended configurations for your monitor, probably from the manufacturer's site would be a place to start, or maybe even call them if you can't find it out on the web anywhere.

Iīm not sure, but i think itīs more ment for old monitors. My monitor (aoc crt monitor) just says "wrong refresh rate" and goes in some protecting mode, donīt know about tft screens

I also think this risk rather applies to old CRT monitors, which use high power to drive the cathode ray tube, and have no internal protection against invalid (dangerous) sync rates. (Like mine, a 10 years old one, which I almost fried accidentally.)
This problem, however, should not apply to notebooks or laptops where LCD is used, and thus the power is far lower. Although I am not quite sure.
