from SUSE to Ubuntu
Hi,
I have installed SUSE in a Windows XP desktop and I want to change this distribution to Ubuntu without damaging my Windows XP partition or loose any data. How should I proceed? Thanks for your help Bob |
Hi,
It would help if you gave us more information, is this a dual boot machine or is Suse installed in a VM? Does SUSE have separate partitions if it's installed as a dual boot? |
SUSE is in a separate partition
Yes it is a dual boot. I have SUSE in a separate partition. Under windows, I can see 3 partitions not recognised by windows. I guess this is where SUSE is installed one has 2.01 Gb, another one 19.86 and the last one 32.08 Gb.
I could probably simply suppress these partitions and reinstall completely a new distribution of Linux, but I want to be sure that this is harmless to my both windows partitions: C and D. Thank you for your help. Regards Bob |
Yes, it is harmless as long as you don't make any mistakes (i.e. you wouldn't delete the windows/ntfs partitions). You can delete them from windows and do the install or just leave them and delete or overwrite them while installing. I think you'll want to resize them anyway; 20GB for an Ubuntu / partition is wasting space; make it 10 (maybe 15 if you're a developer and you need lots of libraries and docs). The leftover is extra space for your /home partition.
If uncertain how to partition the space, check google. Plenty of tutorials out there. |
