fresh kernel compiled, but hangs
hey there,
I'm running Xubuntu (Gutsy, i think), with the kernel upgraded via synaptic to 2.6.20-16-generic, on a Dell 700m with 512Mb RAM. I just downloaded, unpacked, configured, and compiled 2.6.23.1. sudo make install_modules install seemed to go well, until the end, when I got some stuff about LILO, which I don't use. So, I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to include the new kernel, and I noticed that there is a kernel in /boot, but no new initrd. I've nosed around some, but I have a feeling that it's something so incredibly stupid that I'll never find the specific grain of rice I'm after in amongst the others. My thanks, and if you take enough interest to ask for more specifics (I didn't save any output or dmesg) gladly provide what I can. ivan edit: so, as you may have guessed, the issue is that when I try to boot with the new kernel, but the initrd line of my menu.lst entry pointing to the old initrd, the computer hangs with the progress bar in the splash screen just barely showing a sliver of progress. ivan |
you need to make your own initrd image

thank you
Hopefully, I will be back in this thread in the near future with my new kernel running.
