fresh install wont boot
 

I've tried installing SuSE 7.2 on two different hd's and each time i get the same result.The monitor just scrolls 1'a and 0's.This was after first clearing the hd's with kildisk.my comp wont even acknowledge my first hd.I was able to killdisk this one and restore XP to it.Can someone help me?

You should really use a newer release. You may well be running into hardware support problems. Or the bootloader wasn't installed correctly.

As masonm says, get a newer version. The first one I tried was SuSE 8.0 and that was over 4 years ago - SuSE is now at version 10.1, owned by Novell and considerably better than it would have been at v 7.2

Oh and the 1/0 thing is usually an incorrectly installed bootloader.

I set the parameters in bios manually and got the mb to recognize the drives again.Reinstalled Suse 7.2 on one and restored xp on the other hd.They're both booting fine now.

I'm in need of an updated browser though.What did i expect
for $5 anyway.This linux stuff is hard!

Tell ya what my friend, it's not so much hard/difficult, as unfamiliar. Seriously so.

It also seems to be about how badly we have the "world of windows" stuck in our heads. I started with this "linux thing" 4 years plus ago and I still find myself trying to do things like when I had XP installed (I've been "linux only" for about 2 now - I felt that it was the only way i.e. to make myself have to learn).

I can only re-iterate, that it'd be worthwhile getting a more up to date version. SuSE for example - the "Xgl/Compiz" thing, means that you get to have some really mad stuff going on with the desktop (eye candy wise). Though in the 4 years or so that I've been meddling with linux, it has shown massive improvements in lots of areas that you might not have to fight with so much, like installation, ease of network configuration, cross browser support (so we can use win codecs and similar), not forgetting that the depth of available apps is unbelievable.

The widest possible range, seems to be for debian based distros (hence I've ended up with Kubuntu (the kde version of ubuntu) - in excess of 18000 different packages.

If it's good enough for the likes of Amazon, Google, the BBC, Pixar, to name but a few, then hell, it's got to be good enough for me - though as I say, it does take a bit of "re-alignment" of the old grey matter. It ain't windows :D
