Fresh Debian Install, cannot get Internet connection

I have had this problem on multiple distro's including a .ova of xubuntu which had no problem on my laptop with VMWare. My desktop machine running VMWare is a different story, both the .OVA of xubuntu and a fresh install of Debian fail the DHCP auto config. Now with my OS not having internet I cannot download the DHClient or update the software.

I am most confused as to how the DHCP would fail when the virtual machine acknowledges the ethernet hardware of my physical machine and that these installs work on my laptop.

I am only a few months new to linux so and all google searches were no help.

Rest of network setup?

Does your system have an ethernet connection? I ask because my notebook has no ethernet connection.
I was able to use debian-live,but couldn't get wireless & could tether phone only during live-session, not during install. After install I was able to connect to internet by tethering my phone & installing wireless drivers.
My system is HP EliteBook.

I will reiterate more simplistically with more details.

For starters my windows 8 Laptop has no problem with Linux including two different distribution. I Installed Debain on my laptop last night and as I expected it worked. It is my desktop where linux does not recognize my screen resolution (I have to run 3 lines of xrand to create and set the resolution every time the system reboots) and it will not connect to the internet.

The automatic DHCP setup in the system install failed. I have tried both Bridged connection and NAT and I am getting nothing.

Something of interest now after looking into it, in the networking settings it says cable unplugged and only lists the Hardware address. I reboot the machine every time I change network settings and as of now it still believes the ethenet cable is unplugged.

By default, Debian does not have the non-free and contrib repositories enabled. You probably need the non-free firmware. Enable the non-free and contrib repositories, either in Synaptic or by editing your sources.list, update, and install firmware-linux-nonfree. Reboot after installing.

Why would the same distribution work on one machine and not the other if I needed to install non-free software?

sgosnell 12-13-2015 07:40 PM

Perhaps one machine doesn't require the non-free firmware. It's hardware-specific.

Alright so I downloaded the files to my USB drive and now I can't get it to mount. I have no clue how to find the USB drive, I just tried tutorials and nothing happens.

mount -a did nothing

EDIT: As I have just realized, VMWare is not recognizing my USB drive. Lovely.

So after shutting down linux and rebooting windows, linux keeps booting into emergency mode where "systemctl default" is locking up.

Looks like its VMware's fault. Trying a resintall of VMware and a new install of linux.

As I expected, My install of VMware Workstation 11 was screwed up somehow. Had nothing to do with the distros I was using. Let this be a reference to those using VMware. This problem stumped both myself and my c programming in linux professor for about 5 months.
