You need to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list & commen out the cd or dvd. Also you will need an active internet.

OK, I'll have to try a fresh install as I didn't configure a network (wifi). Is it normal practice to have internet hard lined in during install?

There are ways to get the network up without reinstalling. Or you can download the packages & put them on cd/usb.

Good, so I need to find the linux-firmware and linux-firmware-nonfree packages, save to USB, upload and install? Miss anything?

There maybe something else that yiu need but it will prompt you for them, or look at depends.

Can I add a package using aptitude from a usb?

I think you would use dpkg.

I believe the first 2 commands are for you. You have to bein the directory where the package is located http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-...-deb-packages/

I found this one that's debian specific (I know it doesn't matter) http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2010/06/...e-deb-package/

firmware-Linux, firmware-Linux-free, and firmware-Linux-nonfree installed and listed in aptitude. Still boots to blank screen with blinking cursor in upper left-hand corner. I'm scared

Going into the BIOS and toggling the boot sequence between my two drives solved my issue. Now I'm working on 1920x1080
