Frequent freeze with Mandrake on a Portege

I'm running Mandrake 9.1 on a Toshiba Portege 3480CT and everything installed first time (and second and third time...) but every so often (and there really doesn't seem to be any consistency) the whole lot freezes requiring a reboot.

It happens in all of the desktops and it happens with no regularity (I have been using Browsers, OpenOffice, the KDE help, Config screens). And it can happen within 2 minutes or after twenty.

I'm new to this linux malarkey (clueless some would say) so I'm really after suggestions on how to investigate this rather than a specific fix (but hey if you have a specific fix I'm not going to ignore it)

What are your computer specs? I use mandrake 9.1 and had the same problem. To solve my problem I just stopped using kde. Kde I found is pretty resource hungry and for me gnome worked alot better. If you are wondering the difference between gnome and kde the only one really I see is the eye candy. I do think gnome is very nice but I think kde is a little on the prettier side. Just try gnome and see what you think, or tinker with something else like blackbox or kfce ext........

Hope I was a help!
