Freeze during Installation (cd read)
 

Well, i'll first start out explaining the problem. During the installation of Mandrake Linux version 9.0, I get all the way to the part where it begins to install all of the files from the CD. On the second CD (which I burned myself, and have no tried to burn again, since it seems to work fine) it hangs after moving only a few increments on the progress bar. I've tried only installing the core requirements, and it does the same thing. After waiting a substantial amount of time, the read activity light on my CD drive turns off, and I cant do anything. The entire program freezes.

This is some info about my system and how i'm installing.

I'm using my secondary hard drive to install linux, since my primary is on one whole partition and I have windows XP running.

900mhz AMD Athlon
896MB ram
6GB HD
GeForce 2 MX-64
Windows XP system
CD-RW drive that the CD is running in, to install. My normal CD drive died recently=( (it's set as the secondary master)

If I forgot to mention anything, please let me know. I'll probably re-burn the CD and see if the install works this time.

Have you calculated the md5sums of images before burning them? If not, please download md5summer (www.md5summer.org) and sums of the image files (they're in the same directory you got the images from), calculate the sums and compare. If the sum of your cd and a sum from the list differ, it means there was a transmission problem and you need to download the image again.

Yup, I already tried that. I've checked and rechecked everything. Burned and reburned everything. Maybe my CD-RW drive just sucks.. anyhow, but yes... i've done that.

When the installation stops, switch to consoles (Crtl+Alt+F1 to F4). One of them (Crtl+Alt+F2) shows the installation log. The error message (if there's any) should be there.

Well, I'm still working on it. But as of now, Im guessing that the problem is a faulty CD. I'll try re-downloading the ISO for the second disk of mandrake and reinstalling. One time, it finally completed installing (after telling me certain components couldnt install, via a popup).. and then it finally said that the CD was "bad".

Anyhow, that's Mara for the replies, I appreciate your help=)

This really sucks=)

I re-downloaded the ISO image and burned it onto a CD again, and then when I went to install again, it still froze up. It would then continue after about 20 minutes between each freeze, and finally got to the end. At the end (after a few popups of saying that this or that file couldnt be installed) it said that not all components were installed and that i either had a bad CD-rom drive or a bad CD. *shrug* I downloaded the file segmented using a download accelerator, which im thinking may have been the problem. I suppose I can try downloading it straight from the website again, but last time i tried it got halfway then timed out=(

Oh well.. looks like no linux for me.

Could you test the cds with any other machine? If they work (maybe a cd fault?) you can always move your hd to other machine, install on it and then you'll need only to reconfigure it.

Nahh, no other computers around to do it on. My friends all have their HDDs partitioned fully, and no spares to muck around on. I suppose I'll figure it out eventually, if not, I have a friend who has a working copy of Mandrake that he's used to install it on his system. If that doesnt work on mine, it has to be some sort of hardware problem.
