Freevo and Xawtv

How can I get freevo and xawtv working?

this is because tvtime doesnt work on my pc.

MasterC 07-18-2003 04:18 AM

Is xawtv working by itself? That'll probably be the trick. Once that's running by itself, you'll probably have much more luck when trying to config it with freevo. Search for threads on configuring xawtv as there are many threads on this. Once you get that done, post back if you are still having problems making it work with freevo.

Cool

yup . . .xaw tv is working by itself. but i dont know how to use it with freevo. also, i cant get any tv listings because i'm in india. is there anyway to create some pseudo listing?

Ok, so which capture card are you using? And did you mean Indiana or India?

Have you seen the documentation?

:)

Cool

i did mean INDIA. i do stay in Indiana also, study at Purdue, i'm spending my summer at home.

i did read the documentation, though not very thoroughly. i do get a lot of RTFMs. but, in case some one's done something similar before, it would be faster for me to set it up.

MasterC 07-18-2003 09:06 AM

Sure, yeah, I understand. Which card you using?

Cool

starunj 07-18-2003 09:10 AM

i use an AverMedia TV Tuner card, based on the BT878 chipset. It says AVerMedia TVPhone 98 TVCapture 98 *w/VCR* on it. I dont know why it says both Phone and Capture though.
xawtv works as is(maybe because it came installed with Red Hat 9). by the way, my system configuration is:

P III 500 MHz (Katmai)
128 MB PC 100 MHz RAM
Mercury/Kobian 440 ZX
40 GB Samsung 5400 RPM Hard Disk Drive
Compaq CD-ROM drive
Cirrus Logic GD5465 4 MB AGP Card
D-Link DFE-538 TX NIC

and yup, i'm upgrading my graphics card soon.

MasterC 07-18-2003 09:22 AM

Yeah, the docs cover the BT878 cards well ;) Good Luck!

Cool

starunj 07-18-2003 09:24 AM

thanks for your help. but my problem wasnt with the card, it was with configuring xawtv to work with freevo. anyways, thanks for your time. i'll RTFM, but any help would help ;).

MasterC 07-18-2003 09:31 AM

:) I'll set it up again and then come back and give you pointers/advice. It's been too long for me to give you exact advice other than it really is all in the docs. I suggest also looking at other projects like mythTV if you haven't.

Cool

starunj 07-18-2003 09:39 AM

thanks a lot, please dont waste your time, you may have more important things to do. i did check out mythtv, but was intimidated by it and was irritated because it was too complex, i did hear people say that it will be worth the effort, but i want to get a decent box up and running. i will have a go at mythtv though. PS: right now, playing any video file is REAL bad, will upgrading the video card help? does playback of video files depend solely on the graphics card?
thanks again

MasterC 07-18-2003 09:54 AM

Nah, video is very CPU intensive as well. But if you've got a good graphics card it will take a lot of that weight off the CPU AFAIK.

Also, you might consider using different programs. Mplayer is considered one of the best so give that a run and try different -vo's.

And I've not really got more important things to do ;) I was thinking of doing a DNS project, but learned that I need to study up a bit more on that first, so I'll be happy to do another media project. Take your pick, I'll do MythTV or Freevo, whichever you are more interested in.

Cool

I'm currently tring MythTV / Freevo. But having a heck of a time just getting it installed without giving errors and whatnot? Any luck attacking either one of these? I could use some help / steps.
