now something else, i like programming in PHP and would like to know where i can download a php-editor.

i downloaded 1 from www.dzsoft.com but it is a .exe file
and if i'm right it can not be installed on linux.

or are .exe able to be opened on linux???

I don't know much about this, but have often read about bluefish (http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/index.html) and Quanta (http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/docs.php). Which one you want to use might also depend on your choice of Desktop Environment. Bluefish is a GTK application and might be shipped with your GNOME environment, and Quanta is a QT application and might therefore be shipped with your KDE. Consult the feature list of the distro you want to download, if one of these both is included.

back to your original problem --

You seem to stumble upon the worst .isos out there. Where are you getting them from? WILL YOU please post your links?

I got most of my distros via torrent. I got two clients -- "Bittorrent" and "Bittoronado". The latter is by far my favorite and would recommend it to anyone.

One more thing. It could be your method of burning the images to media. Does your burner support buffer underrun protection? If not that could be what's mass-producing coasters for you. If you burner doesn't support buffer underrun protection burn your images at lowest speed. It will take a lot longer to burn but may help. Also, which burning application are you using? I've had good luck burning these linux images with Nero and CloneCD. Have you tried one of these?

Short answer - no. They're not the right sort of binary format to run on a Linux system. It's a fair bet that unless the page you downloaded it from specifically said Linux, it'll be a Windows executable. If you're looking for linux software, try searching using Google Linux; or a lot of the larger sites have linux subsections, such as Tucows, or give you the option to limit your search to Linux software, like download.com.

Having used Quanta myself, I can say that it's very good for tasks like PHP editing, and straightforward too!

Try another FTP client. If you are in Windows try FileZilla. I have not had the opportunity to try the Linux FTP clients yet. I just ditched windows. I am sure that other Linux users can recommend a good Linux FTP client.

Having used KDE until a couple of weeks ago, I can say that Konqueror's built-in FTP was great - the same drag-and-drop interface you use for manipulating files locally, with a good interface and feature set for everyday tasks. Granted, I don't do anything complicated with FTP, but I never found it lacking.

Just open up a standard Konqueror window, and point it at ftp://username:password@your.ftp.org.

I came across a list of other clients at Linux Reviews when I was looking to choose one; possibly a little brief (and I have a feeling it's missing one or two) but a good pointer as to what's out there.

I have paid attention to linux for quite a few years and used official downloads previously as early as when it was at the MIT free software institute. but I retired for a few years and the technology has changed and I did not keep up to date.

I downloaded the Suse 9.3 trial and burned the iso image onto a DVD using Nero 6.0 in both a non-bootable and bootable format. But what I do not understand is now how to take the iso image and install a dual boot onto my HP Pavillion 64 Bit AMD athlon laptop.

I am short on cash right now and can not spare the $100 to go get an official license and would appreciate any help on being able to install this iso image and set up the boot primarily for Linux but with the option of using windows. I typically use OpenOffice so I do not really need windows, but I have files under windows already setup that I need to use. I am not a CS or IT expert but have done quite a bit. I am working on setting up my own company right now, so I do not have access to the folks who have helped me set up in the past.

I would suggest you download the latest Suse version which is Suse 10 (get the eval DVD or 5 CD set, its the same thing). If you still need your windows partition you can create a dual boot and select between the two Oses when you boot your system. To create isos using nero or any other programs on Windows, you need to choose the option to burn a cd image. If you use nero there are detailed instructions you can get by searching on this site or on google.

I have the iso on 9.3 already on DVD. The problem I have is that windows does not recognize the file and it will not boot the computer directly off of the DVD. I have supposedly a bootable and non-bootable version of the 9.3 iso file. What I need to know how to do is boot off of the iso file. I assume that is what I am trying to do.

The settings to boot off the DVD are in your BIOS not in Windows. All modern motherboards should be able to boot from a CD/DVD drive.

I interrupted the Phoenix bios on my AMD HP Pavilion zv6000 Athlon 64 with 1 Gigabyte of DRAM memory, but found nothing in it defining the use of the DVD for booting. When I restart the computer and try to boot off of the DVD iso file for the AMD64 download from the Suse trial dvd - The computer puts me into the A drive instead of booting off of the 9.3 iso file DVD. Officially I have a DVD+/-RW drive and have attempted both + and - r DVD's that I have successfully burned with Nero 6.0. I have tried both the bootable and non-bootable option on the burn and verified size of file.

Ok. Maybe I am just stupid, but I have the boot order set up in bios for the

"Atapi CD-Rom Drive" to be first. But it does not seem to see the DVD. It runs the DVD but does not boot off of it and when I have the DVD in the drive it kicks me into the A drive even if I put the boot order of the A drive below the hard drive. I used the "bootable option" on Nero 6.0 when I burned the DVD and the iso file matches the size indicated prior to download on the OpenSuse site. I downloaded SUSE 10.0 last night for the 64bit iso from the Utah University mirror site and did not see any problems with the download.

Is it possible that the only way to use the DVD is to have a "patch" since the Bios thinks it is a CD-ROM?

That means that you have the floppy set to boot up first. Also make sure you've removed any floppys from the drive. The boot options will be in BIOS somewhere.

Hm, I guess there's still something wrong. All Linux CDs I know, if it is the only one or the first of a multiple dics set, should be bootable. That doesn't depend on your Nero settings. In fact, if you burn them right, you never get the dialog where to choose between "bootable/non booatble". Just burn them as Image file (you find this option in the "file" menu) and let Nero do it's job, nothing to take care about yourself.
