FQDN ubuntu VPS

Hi all,

I need to assign a Fully Qualified Domain Name to my Ubuntu VPS, but before I do it I would like to understand what it means. Is this...
Code:

$ hostname --fqdn
$ hostname: Name or service not known

normal ie meaning that there is no FQDN yet assigned? Also I think any domain like www.example.com is a FQDN so assigning a FQDN to my VPS does not just mean hosting a domain (which I am doing already) right? My VPS already has an IP address and hosts domains so can anyone please tell me what assigning a FQDN to my VPS means?

Thanks...

Yep, until you've set your FQDN you won't see an output from hostname --fqdn.

Why do you need to assign a FQDN to your VPS? What's the purpose?

@ scratchyrat ok thanks. It is a requirement (#4) of this that I want to install. Can you please say something about what assigning a FQDN to the VPS means ie how it is different to just hosting a domain?

Thanks...
