format a floppy

Is there in the Shell a command to format a floppy disk ?
more often than not the front end utility to format a floppy does not work on MDK 9.1
I heard that the shell commands are less sensitive to bugs and would like to know the command used (if any) to format a floppy disk
than you for your attention

after youve done fdformat you need to put a filesystem on the disk like ext2 or vfat, you can do this with mkfs
