Forgotten password
 

I am trying to use Ubuntu 10.04 update, but have forgotten the password.
If I could get the GRUB prompt, I could use a method I picked up somewhere, but where is the GRUB prompt, which I understand is a bootloader? My installation is single installation on a single partition.
I press ESC before the Splash Screen, but just get a square bracket and pressing ESC makes no difference, to the continued boot process, except perhaps make it a little slower. I really would like to do away with the password altogether. Can someone please help ?

I can use the Desktop and the software I use works fine. There is also something about a 'ring' that requires a password, which I also don't know.

By default on Ubuntu 10.04 you do not see the grub menu if you do not have multi boot system. You will need to edit grub file inside /etc/default directory. And what password have you forgotten? root password? If you can use Desktop and login, is it because you have auto login enabled? If this is not the case, then you can set root password using sudo passwd root command.

Hold the shift key while booting and see if it helps.

It is a bit weird, but after typing a password more times that I can count,
with no luck, I had to type a password to reactivate the screen. The same
password ... and it worked. I immediately went to Update and typed in the
same password I used then ... and before ... and it worked.The system is now
updated. Also, I now have an additional HDD with Windows 7 installed and I
also now have a GRUB menu.
So, the question about editing the grub file inside /etc/default. When you
get there, what do you edit ?
