.fonts symlink

I have around 120 or so fonts sitting on an NTFS partition, and rather than copy them over to my home .fonts (i'm on a single-user system), I thought I'd just create a symlink to them (like I have done for my mp3 collection & XMMS).

I tried:

modify@penance:~$ ln -s /mnt/ntfs/windows/fonts ~/.fonts

However, that doesn't seem to be working; OpenOffice doesn't seem to like the idea, nor does Gnome.

Is this not possible or something?

The font folder needs to be writable, because it needs to generate an index and a cache file.
I suppose you need to copy the fonts manually, or maybe link the actual font files instead.
