Font Appears Scrambled in All GUI's

Hey!
I've recently been messing around with Linux and XF86... I've got Gnome, KDE, and a few other Graphical User Interfaces (GUI's?) and have noticed a rather peculiar problem with the font display..

In any of the GUI's it will not display text properly... more of a crazy barcode looking thing. I have tried to change the font's - but this doesn't seem to solve the problem... What is going on?

Also - in Gnome - the Desktop Icon's have text displaying fine in them... it's mainly the menu systems that don't work.

i'm completely stupid with linux at this stage so go easy on me!

(also - I'm using DragonLinux - from what i understand a very old and now discontinued package... running on an old computer to get the hang on linux before setting up wireless networks with an apple mac and a pc in my flat...)

Check the monitor horizontal and vertical scan rates in your /etc/X11/XF86Config (or xorg.conf) file and compare them with the tech specifications of your monitor. I have found the identical problem if you are driving the monitor at the wrong rate.
