I'm running an emachines with 512mb syncd ram, 20gb hdd, 1ghz intel celeron.

I got slackware v10.2 installed and I got to the terminal window. I login, and type in xinit...

This is the error message I get...

(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time...
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!

That's from logging in as root. The screen goes black, stays black and when I hit ctrl alt f1 I read that message. I've tried every way I know to boot the ui, nothing works. Everytime I get the message about that CID font.

I've checked the configuration file, everything looks fine.. the CID is the same as the others. Please somebody help, I've googled and nobody has given anyone a good answer.

Anything is appreciated, I've reformatted twice and I keep getting the same error. Any way at all to get this to work would help (burning a new cd, reformat and repartition). I don't know anything else I can do besides a new computer. I'm Stuck!!!

on my opinion the messages posted are not really the errors. the screen going blank is the error. it's either you have problems with your x modules or with your driver. also possible is wrong config.

please post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log so that we can have more info.

btw did you configure your X by xorgconfig? or xorgcfg? which one? try to run xorgcfg and if a screen appears then there's a great possibility that you have errors with your drivers or modules.

Well I never ran xorgcfg, until now. I set up the monitor but when it comes to the video card model... I can't find what I have.

What I do know:

Emachines T1100
3D AGP Graphics Intel Direct AGP (810 Shared)

I've googled and can find nothing else, I've filtered every word in that and it's not listed under the models they have. I'm guessing the Driver is i810 but I don't know what to do!

Does this have to be perfect for the xinit to work?

i guess you need to recompile your kernel for that. you need to enable /dev/agpgart, intel i8xx chipset support and direct rendering manager, intel i810.
