Folder location of new files

I'm trying to keep some order to my file structure and am wondering where most people put programs that they download and install. Is there a directory that is generally recognized as something like "Program Files" ?

Hi there is a manual expalining the file system on
Normaly programs first installed (base) are in /usr/bin (binaries) or /user/sbin, added programs are in /user/local.

I put my downloaded files in /Home/deb but apt-get install them in the right directory.
